Opera Releases Beta Web3 Crypto Wallet

Internet browser Opera has launched a beta version of its non-custodial Web3 wallet. PC, Mac, and Android users of the Opera platform will now be able to browse through gaming, metaverse, NFT, and DeFi dapps and trade cryptocurrencies. The move is hoped to accelerate crypto into the mainstream by offering direct access to Web3 services via the most used devices.

The current Opera browser has a no-login VPN and native ad and tracking blocker that has helped make it a popular choice for today’s more savvy internet users. The new crypto browser will maintain these security features while integrating direct access to decentralized exchanges, NFT marketplaces, and gaming dapps, as well as Telegram and Twitter support.

The built-in, non-custodial wallet will support Ethereum and eventually roll out on Polygon, Solana, Celo, and other EVL compatible blockchain ecosystems. They expect the Polygon integration first, around the end of March 2022. The wallet supports ERC-20 tokens and nonfungible ERC-721 tokens, with support for ERC-1155 NFTs coming later this quarter as well. Users will also be able to purchase crypto via a built-in fiat-to-crypto on-ramp, complete token swaps, and even access a built-in NFT gallery.

Opera adds blockchain options

MetaMask has been a market leader in the Web3 wallet sector for a long time, despite numerous other Web3 wallets entering the space. However, METAMASK has arguably got slightly fat and lazy amidst their superior position. The wallet works well but is not the most user-friendly setup, it also suffers from a lack of basic features, like dark mode.

As more people come to understand the value of crypto and NFTs, they will dive in looking for services, wallets, and apps that match their expectations. Those will arguably be high expectations, set by the standards from the Web2 world. Opera believes Web3 has to be easy for the decentralized web to reach its full potential. Furthermore, as people take personal data more seriously, the time could be right for Opera to stake its claim as a mainstream Web3 browser.
